In October 2022, the Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan Charitable Trust (Trust) will be leading a city-wide effort to recognize and celebrate Rev. Leon Sullivan’s 100th Birthday, highlighting his legacy and ongoing local and global impact as a civil rights and social justice activist. The Trust and the City of Philadelphia are working with the Philadelphia International Airport to change the name of its Philadelphia Airport International Arrivals Hall to the Philadelphia Airport International Leon H. Sullivan Arrivals Hall. This name change would be a pinnacle event in Rev. Leon Sullivan’s 100th Birthday events. It is also an ideal way to honor Rev. Leon Sullivan because of the following:

  • The Philadelphia Airport International Leon H. Sullivan Arrivals Hall will be the first impression that multicultural and international visitors receive of Philadelphia and would positively reflect a city that values economic inclusiveness, fairness, and equity;
  • The Philadelphia Airport International Leon H. Sullivan Arrivals Hall will be extremely visible as millions of people travel though Arrivals Hall year-round, and it is the destination in the Philadelphia International Airport for special events and press conferences; and
  • The Philadelphia Airport International Leon H. Sullivan Arrivals Hall will align with the City’s proactive efforts to celebrate the contributions of Blacks in its public and civic spaces.

The Leon H. Sullivan Charitable Trust (“the Trust”) will partner with the City of Philadelphia to recognize and celebrate Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan’s 100th Birthday with events and activities in his honor. We will be sharing details of these exciting events soon.

We are inviting organizations and institutions in Philadelphia to join the Trust and the City of Philadelphia in honoring Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan’s centennial legacy by planning your own celebratory events to occur in October 2022. Events could focus on celebrating Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan’s life, entrepreneurship, job training, community-based economic development, empowerment in the Black community, or other themes that Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan represented. Your events will be included in the Leon H. Sullivan 100th Birthday Celebration Calendar, which will be distributed to the media and promoted city-wide.

We invite you, as an organization or an individual to submit a brief recorded video message of how you were inspired by Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan and share your thoughts on the relevance of his philosophies as solutions to our current social and economic inequities.

 Your video will be part of the Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan Centennial Celebration video wall soon to be created on the Trust website. It will also be part of a display at the Philadelphia International Airport during the renaming ceremony of Arrival Hall to the Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan Arrival Hall on October 18, 2022. Please visit thesullivantrust.org for more information.
